I am looking for a very small quantity of Modafinil. Looking for approximately 1 gram actually. Where is the best place to buy this amount in the US that is as safe as possible. I don't want to get rat poisoning or something.

You don't want to get rat poison? LOL.
You want a single gram of modafinil? That's a trivial amount.
If you want to evaluate the effects of modafinil -- I would suggest starting out with adrafinil -- it's not a controlled substance so ordering it not that stressful. And it has been shown to be safe in elderly folks for periods of three months. Adrafinil is not that expensive either. If you like the effects of 600mg -- then that means 200mg modafinil will suit you well (Effects are about the same).
Because modafinil is a schedule IV controlled substance in the USA, I would not recommend importing it without a prescription from a US MD -- unless you want to risk fines and jail time.

I have ordered modafinil from http://pharma-orders.com and recieved at least 10 orders from them without any problems -- I do have a prescription for Provigil though. They are not as cheap as http://freedom-pharmacy.com for 100 200mg pills ($112 USD) -- however, pharma-orders will match their price by email request. Pharma-orders and freedom-pharmacy sell Sun Pharma's http://www.sunpharma.com/ Modalert or Modafil.
If you only want a small amount -- 10 pills -- you can try http://airsealed.com -- I have never tried that brand -- so I can't really say as much.

If you just want to try a bit of a drug - could you just PM someone who might be taking it and then have them ship the drug to you? In that case, the costs of shipment might be higher than the actual drug costs though.
