Supplement advice wanted

tedsez's Photo tedsez 25 Apr 2006

I've been taking a lot of supplements lately -- for the most part, pretty mainstream stuff (multivitamin/mineral, grapeseed extract, resveratrol, bilberry extract, ginseng, milk thistle, alpha-lipoic acid, l-carnitine, pycnogenol, green tea extract, etc.).

I try to keep the costs down buy buying at Costco and Trader Joe's (and two-for-one days at Vitamin World), but it still gets pretty pricey, so I'd like them to be as effective as possible.

Here's my question: I take the major dose in the morning, when I also have coffee with milk and often an omelet with egg whites and low-fat cheese. But I've seen several studies (such as on chocolate) that suggest that antioxidants become useless when combined with milk. Does this mean I shouldn't have any dairy products at the same time as taking antioxidant supplements? If not, how long should I wait in between?

I'd appreciate a response from anyone who knows the answer to this.

I've heard that, but it was from a less than credible source. I don't take in much dairy, so I've never looked into it that much.

Yes I've heard this also, I always interpreted the results as suggesting milk only reduced the absorption of the flavonols found in cocoa and tea not the other antioxidant flavonoids or vitamins found in blueberries etc.

But checking for info on the web I came across this interesting article...

TBH I still drink my whey protein with milk about 1 hour after my meals, just in case. :)
