Amantadine for ADHD Log

CWF1986's Photo CWF1986 07 Jan 2020

This thread is here to describe my experience with amantadine to give a case study of sorts for others to look at and decide if it's something they want to try.

Stimulants have harsh sides and addictive potential and the non stims are only partially effective for many and can sometimes themselves be intolerable hence why I'm trying something more unconventional.

I might link the studies and reviews I've read about it later, but for now I'm just gonna say that there are a lot of preliminary studies suggesting efficacy ranging from somewhere between untreated and stim meds to being as effective as stims for treating adhd symptoms for both inattentive and hyperactivity symptoms.

The MOA relevant to adhd has to do with NMDA antagonism.  This has indirect effects that increase dopaminergic activity in the pathways and areas of the brain involved w/ executive fuction.  There's also a lot of promising studies in regards to autism symptoms specific to executive function.

There's even some decent evidence suggesting that it makes a good adjunct for antidepression meds.

The effects are typically noticed within a couple days to as long as a couple of weeks although it occasionally can be noticed in the first day or two.  Steady state serum levels are usually reached 48-72 hours.

I also have depression and anxiety that is currently being well managed with sertraline and aripiprazole and therapy.  As of now and the past several weeks my mood has been good and rumination/worry feelings and thoughts have been infrequent and mild.  I still have the unresolved symptoms of low energy, lack of focus, difficulty concentrating, difficulty w/ initiative, internal restlessness w/ outward fidgeting, and tiredness.

Without further ado the log starts here:

100mg BID morning and mid-afternoon

Day1:

I'm very surprised.

After just two doses, my head is a little clearer and some of my adhd restlessness has been abated.  I'm not fidgeting quite as much.  My mental energy levels and mental stamina is improved somewhat.  Early responses to psych meds are something that psychiatrists see as promising regarding a med's potential success for a patient so I'm feeling pretty optimistic!

The only sides I'm experiencing right now is very slightly increased perspiration and very slightly reduced appetite.

I'll post again in 3 days which will be long enough to have reached steady state serum levels.

Day 6

I am feeling a tad more clearheaded and focused than from day 1.  I'm still not quite where I need to be so I'll give it a couple to a few more days as it can take 1-2 weeks to reach full effect from my understanding and if little to no improvement I'll adjust the dose from 100mg BID to 200mg morning, 100mg afternoon.

Day 10

On day eight I upped the dose to like I said I would to 200mg morning, 100mg afternoon.  I can already tell a difference and I'm where I need to be.  I'm more awake, alert, focused, i have better concentration, a longer attention span, short term memory is improved, and I have better attention to detail.

I don't have increased drive or motivation but I think the Zoloft and Abilify are sapping me dry of that.  I'd be willing to try amantadine monotherapy to see if it helps with depression and anxiety on its own.  I speak with my psychiatrist tomorrow so I'll see then.  But one thing's for sure, I won't be taking Zoloft anymore.  It's sides are unacceptable and will prevent me from reaching my current longterm goals in life.

I just hope my psych. doesn't have a fit when she finds out I got the amantadine for myself but I'm sure glad I tried it :)

Another update next time something significant comes up or a week from now.  Whichever occurs sooner.

Talk about total lack of support for your efforts..Interesting how that works?

It's getting views and I didn't really expect a whole lot of comments since I wasn't asking a question and the fact I'm delving into what's somewhat terra incognita.  However, this thread does have 100-200 views so if that just helps out a couple of people it was worth it.  Just jotting down my notes on it has helped me even if no one saw this so it wasn't a total waste.  I'm not at all down about it :)

Day 14

My psych won't treat me anymore, but thankfully so far the amantadine is working well for depression and anxiety by itself.  She wasn't treating my adhd anymore anyway and didn't seem to understand the interaction between adhd, anxiety, and depression so it might be for the better.  I'll get a new doc asap if I notice moderate to severe depression/anxiety symptoms flare up.

Amantadine works well for adhd for me is my tentative conclusion.  Unless something comes up, this is the end of my "Amantadine for ADHD Log"

Take care peeps!

Thanks for your log! :)

I am also trying to find the best stack for my ADHD.

I already tried Deprenyl, Fasoracetam, Amantadine.

Conclusions:

- Deprenyl solo, 5mg/day - quite weak, don't notice much from it.

- Deprenyl 5mg + Fasoracetam 30mg (sublingually)  - weird stack, makes me focused & relaxed at the same time. Hard to work when you're relaxed.

- Deprenyl 5mg + Fasoracetam 100-130mg orally + caffeine = great combo. Would rate it 4/5. This is the only stack where in the evening I could come up with idea to watch tutorials instead of binge-watching Youtube mindlessly.

- Deprenyl 5mg + Amantadine 100mg * 2 - my first day on this stack. So far - no results, seems weaker than previous stack. But I will try this combo for at least 1 week before moving on.

Have you considered stacking Deprenyl & Amantadine? They seem to be very synergistic. Have a look:

I decided to stack 'em since both are used off-label for ADHD.

I ordered some selegiline and will try the combo.  Because of the Rona, it'll be about a month before I get it.  I'll report more once I've had the chance to give it a go!

Whoever keeps giving the "dangerous, irresponsible", do you have a reason for saying so?  Please elaborate, I genuinely would like to know more.

hi bud.  long time :).  going through another deprenyl run myself.  it seems to stack well in low dosages with the racetams, at least and provides a small fraction of what amps do.  higher dosages get weird for me,  >10mg.  let me know how it goes for you.  got me curious about the amantadine now, so following  ;)

amantadine structur is slightly different from memantine. does even the slightest change make a big difference side effect wise?
