Whilst reading about secular humanism I came upon this article which appealed to me. Humanism is a belief that the problems of humans need to be solved by humans and not to rely on the supernatural to do so. Many people believe that God must exist because the universe itself is so complicated and purpose built. This article describes how evolution can account for the complexity of biological systems without the intervention of a 'master builder'.

Thanks Kevin. Humanism has a respected and established following. Transhumanism is a newer, and I think, more relevant philosophical movement. I think ImmInst is in a good position to further this line of thinking by creating a clear and cohesive Immortalist Philosophy of Immortalism. We can build on the works of Transhumanism and Cryonics.. and we can look to such works by R. Michael Perry in 'Forever for All: Moral Philosophy, Cryonics, and the Scientific Prospects for Immortality' and others like Robert Ettinger for guidance. With the advent of a potentially deathless society, there will be many difficult questions to answer as to how one should live. I think this is where we can do some good along with finding practical ways in which to extend life.

I liked the article Kevin. A while back I was actually looking for the answer to the problem of how the eye (or any complex organ) evolved from nothing. It is very satisfying to see that there is an answer.
The one point that the author was a little vague on was where life originated from to begin with. There are a lot of Christians out there who no longer buy into creation theory. Instead they buy into evolutionary theory, but the twist is that they still claim that God created the origins of life. This could either be viewed as a retreat on the part of religion or its amazing ability to adapt. I think its a little of both. This gives me a good idea for a new thread...
