Nootropic Suggestions?

wootwoot's Photo wootwoot 08 Jan 2007

I am currently prescribed a few medications and am trying to find a nootropic regimen that will work well for me. I currently take cymbalta, lamictal, and klonopin daily. I find the klonopin can slow me down mentally being a benzodiazapine while lamictal keeps me from feeling to energized and manic and the cymbalta keeps me from falling into a nonproductive depressive funk. Anyways I have tried piracetam a couple of times around 1 gram each time and it worked well and kept me on the ball. The only problem I had with it was that I felt overstimulated I guess, very manic feeling to the point that it was getting hard for me to appear normal to those around me. A lot of the time I am sort of the absent minded professor kind of person. I will forget small but important details which is crucial in my line of work (IT). I am looking for something to remedy this but without the overstimulation. I used to be prescribed ritalin and adderall before and felt that the adderall kept me on top of things better while the ritalin gave me more headaches and made me more overstimulated too but nowhere near the piracetam. If you guys have any suggestions on what I may want to try I am all ears, thx.

It sounds like you may be manic-depressive. If so (and even if not) you should be taking fish oil.

For depressive or manic-depressive disorders, you should be taking at least 6gm of fish oil a day, preferably enteric-coated and high DHA.

In time, this may allow you to lower your dosages of the drugs, but don't go cold turkey.

Good luck!

Who (if you are not self-medicating) prescribed this medications to you?

I advise that you talk to them.

wootwoot: Id advise high dose grape seed and blueberry exract for protection against neuroleptic induced parkinson-type issues down the road. Both have quite a few studies on them pertaining to neuroprotection and blueberry-inapaticular has shown to reverse motor defects in mice. They also could help with your memory and concentration to a great extent

Talk to your doctor about mirapex and see if he'll switch you to that from cymbalta. Its a really nice, pretty safe (as shown in studies-PRAMIPEXOLE) dopamine agonist that may help with your depression without making you manic/anxious. Also, If your overly manic lamictal (lamotrigine) may not be the best AED for you but you really cant beat its side effect profile so... just ....well have you tried meditative/relaxing techniques?

So, you are currently taking:

1. Cymbalta (generic name: duloxetine HCL)

2. Lamictal (generic name: lamotrigine)

3. Klonopin (generic name: clonazepam).

Please report the dosages. I was taking generic clonazepam 3 mg/day and slowed me way down and made me behave in a highly erratic manner. Be careful with those benzos -- they are addictive -- and I'd recommend not adding alcohol to that stack.

I agree with Jdog that Provigil (generic name: modafinil) is probably the best option; and kotte's got some good suggestions as well -- however, I suggest working this out with your doctor.

And try exercise!

Take care.

Only problem with Provigil is how hard it is to get as it's pretty much a prescription drug anywhere in the world.

Ten bucks says an n-methylated or ring chlorinated modafinil will be fully active, at similar or elevated potency. These will not be patented or scheduled anywhere and will be easily synthed using a modification of the synth from the modafinil patent.
