"Ghost in Your Genes"

Live Forever's Photo Live Forever 17 Oct 2007

Edit: Here is the full program of "Ghost in Your Genes" that was played on PBS's NOVA series about epigenetics. I am adding it to this first post of the thread for ease of watching for future people:

----------------------------------Original first message of thread:----------------------------------------

I am watching this program on PBS's NOVA series called "Ghost in Your Genes" about epigenetics, and it is pretty fascinating. Part of what they were looking at was aging related diseases (and aging itself) along with lots of other diseases (autism, etc.) and things like passing traits on from one generation to another. (most of the last half is about passing traits on) They even go on to show how people who lived through famines had children (and grandchildren) who had much longer lifespans than those who had lots to eat.

Here is the preview:

I hadn't really studied much about epigenetics in general, but the program was very interesting. If I see it online anywhere, I will post it here, but I would recommend watching it if you get a chance to.

I caught part of it but have it tivo'd for future viewing. It looks good. Epigenetics is turning out to be what everyone expected plain old genetics to be.

Yes, I was surprised as to how much stuff it controls, and for how long.
Here is the Nova page talking about the program and epigenics in general: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/genes/

Yup. We might find a back door to putting the smack down on many cancers by fixing some of the epigenetic damage. I'm fairly confident that much of what we're looking for in regards to the heart of aging is right at this level rather than SNPs at the genetic level. SNPs are probably an issue but the epigenetic layer that sits right atop our DNA is really where all the interesting stuff is taking place. There, and in and around the many RNA subtypes being discovered...as we speak. Good times ahead, the genie's out of the bottle :)

I managed to catch the whole thing, and really enjoyed it. I suppose we can be greatful that the obesity rates of our grandfathers era were so dramatically lower than todays. However the grandchildren of my generation will not be so lucky, the harm that we do to our bodies is of a much greater extent.

Yes, and they also mentioned the responsibility factor. How many people will smoke and drink and eat junk and stuff if they just think it will hurt themselves and are willing to do so, and how many will harm their children and grandchildren because of their habits? Suddenly, it isn't just you that you are harming, but one or 2 generations down the road.

I embedded the program in the first post of this thread from Google vids. I am also moving this thread to the Videos and Multimedia forum.

I just realized that the volume is kind of low on it, sorry about that. (just have to turn your speaker volume up higher I suppose) It is worth checking out, though, I promise.

Thanks for posting the video Nate. Much appreciated. I guess you have got everyone scrambling for the medical records or their grandparents now.

It appears the currently embedded version of this video is currently dead, so I figured I'd share this. Here is another full version of the video as found at Thoughtware.TV:
