Nootropics that alleviate tinnitus?

blazewind's Photo blazewind 10 Nov 2007

Anyone have tinnitus decrease from nootropics?

I am taking oxiracetam and it seems to have helped me not notice it since I can focus better.

So far on the internet I found:

Vinpocetin from a pubmed study

and

Idebenone from a uncited wikipedia sentence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idebenone

Anyway let me know if you heard anything or experienced something that helped your tinnitus. Thanks.

I guess you have tried Niacin. My grandfather used it back in the stone-age to treat his tinnitus.

If you include Bupropion as a nootropic, then no. I found it actually created it albeit very faintly (not enough to affect concentration).

Thanks for bringing this up. I'll have to keep Vinpocetin, Idebenone, and Niacin in mind if it gets worse. I might include piracetam in the mix soon and will post here if I notice any reduction or elimination.

Strangely, Bupropion helps with my tinnitus even if tinnitus is a recognized side effect of it! There is probably many kind of tinnitus. Depending on what kind you have, different thing might help. For one kind, substance that improve blood flood seem to help (gingko, vinpocetine). For others, it's vitamins and mineral like Zinc. My tinnitus seems to be related to dopamine. It's the result of stratera+dexedrine. I can't no longer take dexedrine since it make my tinnitus much worse.

Idebenone has helped me. The price is coming down lately.

A long list of theoretically tinnitus-mitigating drugs can be found here. Nootropics on that list include Vinpocetine, Hydergine and Gingko Biloba. That said, I've used Hydergine on and off for years, and haven't found it to reduce my own tinnitus in any noticeable way. OTOH, maybe the tinnitus would be worse without the Hydergine...
