Resveratrol causes peripheral neuropathy?

kaiser's Photo kaiser 16 Feb 2008

I've been taking 100mg to 500mg resveratrol daily since early 2005. Since that time I've suffered from mild sensory neuropathy in my shoulders, thumbs, index fingers, and pinkies. The effect is more pronounced on my left (non-dominant) side.

Because I was recovering from a neurological procedure on my lumbar spine when I began supplementation, I suspected some kind of low-grade tethered cord syndrome as the cause of my upper-body sensory neuropathy. However, recently I've begun to suspect resveratrol as the cause through process of elimination.

I wonder how many other resveratrol-takers suffer from these symptoms. Because sensory neuropathy is rare among non-diabetics, and unscientific survey in this forum would be helpful to me. I'd also like to invite speculation as to the specific mechanisms that might be involved here. If resveratrol does indeed induce a starvation-stress-response in the body, I could imagine an inhibitory effect on the growth of new (and expensive) peripheral neurons even while increasing the durablity of existing neurons. However, I'm not at all familiar with how the peripheral nervous system maintains itself.

I have degenerative Disk disease for over 10 years and I have various neurological symptoms.
The only noticeable new area I noticed since taking RES for 4 years is top of my right leg from my Hip to my Knee is pins and needles numb.
But, it seems difficult for me to beleive that Resveratrol is responsible increasing neurological damage.
Something caused my nerve damage, I had a spinal injury 1995.
But you have an interesting theory, can Resveratrol make peripheral neuropathy worst?

Apparently resveratrol daily doses in excess of 300 mg trigger "pins and needles" sensations in my wife's feet and hands.

Tintinet noted numbness, pins and needles in his hands last year, but the symptoms resolved. He still takes resveratrol. And lots of other stuff.

Yep. I suspect I had a reaction to something other than resveratrol, or some post-viral syndrome at that time. Now taking lots of resveratrol (5 grams/day) without those issues.

on topic, but another board, not telling his doctor taking res, neurological damage, herniated disks and dosing on res,
what if res makes steroids work differently?
