mao-a inhibitors

I was wondering if anyone had some natural mao-a inhibitors they could recommend to me.

So far I have on my list:

St Johns Wort
Mangosteen
B12? I read a medline article that said low b12 is associated with elevated platlet mao, but not sure if it applies to the liver as well.

I'm looking for a natural mao-a inhibitor to give my serotonin some hang time. I supplement 5htp, tryptophan, and inositol, but these only give me relief for about an hour. Adding St Johns Wort helps some. I've been prescribed Prozac before, but it stopped helping after a few days. I have low tolerance for alcohol, 1 drink will give me a nasty hangover, and no tolerance for caffeine, a couple squares of dark chocolate will have me amped for days. I think my liver glutathione is getting nuked by my overactive MAO-A, compromising my ability to break down alcohol and caffeine. I appreciate any recommendations.

Why do you supplement 5-htp and tryptophan? Prozac stopped working after some days? How long did you take it, several weeks at least I hope.

I think my liver glutathione is getting nuked by my overactive MAO-A, compromising my ability to break down alcohol and caffeine.

Sorry, but such theories are useless and most times wrong.

Have you tried Moclobemide?

also administration of 5-htp will cause a trigger to increase MAO production to get rid of excess 5-htp (hence why the good feeling doesnt last long).
MAO floods the synapes and metabolises the extra serotonin. dont forget in this synapes you also have Noradrenaline and Dopamine. they will also get metabolised causing abnormal neurotransmitter levelss....

this ofcourse is all in "long term"

unless its stimulants and amphetamines.. and thats different to amino acid neurotransmitter precursors.

SJW is a mild SSRI.

there is two catergory of MAO, A and B.
MAO-A inhibition would work for Serotonin and Noradrenaline and and some trace amines...
MAO-B inhibition would work for Dopamine and phenylethylamines..

Thanks, that's amazing: I've just lowered my daily dose of Ginkgo from 180 mg/day to 60
because I read about that massive clinical study that failed to find any dementia-related cognitive benefits after 6 years of daily use
So I guess I'll go back to 180, but this time for mood, not so much for cognition;
Also, another MAO-B inhibitor is quercetin, so I've got three items to boost dopamine: Phenylalanine + Ginkgo + Quercetin
I gave up on SJW because it screwed my distance vision.

Phenylalanine is very poor at increasing Dopamine, so is Tyrosine..



Reason for why Phenylalaline is poor because its to far up in precursor level, and it can be turned to other things instead.
Tyrosine is favored to be converted to Noradrenaline rather than Dopamine since it uses Vitamin C as a co-factor,
Vitamin C is the co-factor in the enzyme conversion of dopamine to noradrenaline.....

best bet is to use L-Dopa


Quercetin is also a potent CYP3A4 inhibitor so it will potentiate some drugs also
i actually didnt know of its COMT and MAOI-B activity, interesting.

I hope it does a better job at it than Deprenyl since deprenyl makes me sleepy and lethargic for what ever reason... also makes me cranky

i've found that supplementing magnesium chelate will knock out a serotonin induced headache. i usually take 200mg of magnesium per 500mg of tryptophan. i'm curious if magnesium could stop full blown serotonin syndrome. would be interesting to find out.

i've found that supplementing magnesium chelate will knock out a serotonin induced headache. i usually take 200mg of magnesium per 500mg of tryptophan. i'm curious if magnesium could stop full blown serotonin syndrome. would be interesting to find out.


magnesium is more of a anti anxiety agent
it will be only useful to lower high blood pressure.

only thing, as far as i know to combat serotonin syndrome is serotonin antagonists..

benzodiazepines reduce serotonin syndrome as well. Memantine also prevented in an animal experiment. If you are noticing actually serotonin syndrome symptoms, please avoid taking the combination that induced it, it is quite dangerous.
