Why can't I search titles for ALCAR?

nowayout's Photo nowayout 11 Apr 2011

ALCAR, NAC, etc., etc. return zero search results. As a result, it is impossible to search for threads with these common and useful words in their titles.

I can't do a google search on imminst thread titles, so please don't suggest that.

Could this possibly be fixed? Please!

I just did a search on alcar (case doesn't matter), directing it to look specifically in titles, and got five pages of hits. You can't search for NAC because our search software doesn't index strings with less than four characters. Yeah, I know, great design decision on the part of IPB, huh? A major problem with our search tool is that it seems to be rather arbitrary and capricious about what it chooses to search. It frequently wants to look in "forum help files" for some reason. You have to be sure to direct it to look in the actual forums.

Hmm, well, now it works for me too. Never mind then.

Actually you can, and it's a good workaround for the annoying 4-character minimum all forum software seems to have.

site:longecity.org intitle:NAC will search for NAC in the title. Since the titles are transposed into the URL, you can also use the inurl: search function.

To search for multiple title words, use separate instances of the function: site:longecity.org intitle:NAC intitle:poll, or to search for a phrase, use quotes: site:longecity.org intitle:"NAC poll"

You can also add usernames or subforum names to the search to narrow it down further. Hope someone finds this useful...the advanced search operators are very under-appreciated, and make google a much more powerful search engine.

Actually there's a longecity google search bar near the bottom of each page, so you don't even have to type "site:longecity.org".
