I thought this was interesting - lasers are very precise and very tunable. I doubt it could be used for recombinant gene insertion across the entire body, but perhaps for gene insertion within an individual stem cell or zygote.

When they talk about removing and inserting a nucleus into an egg for cloning purposes, perhaps this type of laser approach might eventually prove useful. The laser could be manipulated far more precisely than any mechanical device such as micro-pipette.

Since lasers are also very miniaturizable, they could even be incorporated as solid-state components into lab-on-a-chip devices. Such integrated devices could then lead to mass-production cloning technology for agriculture and animal husbandry industries.
