Amino Acids

simpy3's Photo simpy3 16 Jan 2014

Hi everyone, I've recently started to take Theanine and I'm also awaiting some Taurine supplements but my question is, is there any dangers from taking multiple amino acid supplements?

Thanks.

There are sometimes side effects due to the metabolism of one amino acid into something else, such as arginine -> agmatine, or phenylalanine -> tyrosine -> l-dopa -> dopamine -> norepinephrine -> epinephrine.

Sometimes two amino acids are required to make something else, so supplementing them together can give different effects from either. And sometimes they just interfere with each others' absorbtion.

Overall, you should be safe unless you're taking excedingly insane dosages of highly reactive aminos.

Are you taking them at the same time?

I take different amino acids every day. I just take them at different times. Obviously, if you take them at the same time they can compete for absorption. If you are taking a whole bunch of supplements all at once, it can mess with neurotransmitter levels. A lot of people say you need to take Tyrosine and 5-HTP at the same time, because if you take 5-HTP too long you'll get an increase in serotonin but a decrease in catecholamines and vice versa. I haven't experienced that problem myself.

With what you are doing you should be fine.
