Memantine- why no effect on mood?

In the above link, a well designed and placebo controlled trial showed no effect on mood with memantine treatment.

I assume other drugs with weak NMDA effects such as acamprosate are also ineffective. I have yet to see a positive study on acamprosate and mood.

Riluzole, on the other hand, has shown some positive results in studies.
Ketamine has shown great results.

So, what is the difference between those that work and those that don't?

Ketamine and riluzole seem to act in a stronger fashion to block glutamate.
Perhaps their more intense/general effects are the cause?
