In the "early" days of cryonics was dry ice and cryoprotectants used instead of liquid nitrogen. Just wondering.

Dry ice has never been officially used for storage of cryonics patients because it is too warm and too expensive. However dry ice was used for several years of bridging storage during the startup phase of both the Cryonics Society of California and Cryonics Institute until they obtained liquid nitrogen dewars and cryostats respectively.
The history of cryoprotectants in cryonics has been hit-and-miss, especially in the early days. It wasn't until the 1980s that cryoprotectants came to be used consistently, and it wasn't until the 1990s that research revealed the importance of high concentrations of cryoprotectants for preserving brain structure. The effect of cryoprotectant concentration on brain structure preservation is illustrated by the micrographs on the bottom of this page
