Bruce Klein's Photo Bruce Klein 12 Feb 2003

Wow, I'm so used to saying 15 billion years.. I'll have to reprogram my neural map... 13.7 - 13.7 - 13.7... - BJK

Astronomers said Tuesday that a new glimpse of the universe from just after its birth has given them a far clearer understanding of the cosmos, including pegging its age at an astonishingly precise 13.7 billion years.

"Every astronomer will remember when they first heard these results," said John Bahcall, professor of natural sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. "The bottom line of today's announcement is that we live in a crazy universe whose defining behavior we know precisely for the last 14 billion years."

In 1992, NASA's COBE mission first detected patterns in the oldest light in the universe (shown as color variations). WMAP brings the COBE picture into sharp focus. The features are consistent and 35 times more detailed than COBE's. Credit: NASA/WMAP Science Team

Hey look on the bright side we are now 1.3 billion years younger with more to look forward to as budding immortals. ;)

And if you didn't get the even better news, NO HEAT DEATH is one of the first conclusions of the data. We are officially members of an infinitely expanding Universe but now I suggest figuring out just how to stay warm in our extreme old age [ph34r]

This however could make cyonics a cinch but then...

Who would thaw us out [?] [wacko]
