Mucuna pruriens

Hello,

I'm not sure whether I'm in the right forum, but I was wondering about longterm use of mucuna pruriens.

Ever since the use of antipsychotic medicines for anxiety I suffer from recurring psychoses. I am court ordered to use 5mg haldol through depot injections. This is too high a dose for me (I function well on 1mg). The large dose of haldol makes me severely depressed and anhedonic. I have either flat or severely depressed emotions.

Now, I found out that with a combination of Akineton and Mucuna pruriens I can feel some happiness and love again and am a bit like my previous self. Mucuna does actually almost the opposite of haldol... it increases dopamine in the brain. I doesn't make me psychotic. My only worry is that this is temporary...does downregulation happen with mucuna? Does it decrease your natural dopamine? Can I use it long time or do I need to take breaks, and if so, what kind of schedule would one recommend? Or is it not recommended at all for longterm use?

Thanks!

Generally speaking, yes, some degree of down-regulation will occur any time you ingest endogenous chemicals (in this case dopamine), or increase your body's production outside the normal range. That said, if the drugs you're on are lowering dopamine, then increasing it somehow through supplements might be wise.

I also feel that straight mucuna, not an extract, would be the best way to go about this, as it does have adaptogenic properties and has been used for hundreds, probably thousands, of years. Then again, it's definitely one of the strongest herbal substances I've used, so be smart and always practice using the minimum effective dose, and play around with taking breaks.

All that said, I really can't give you answers here as I have no knowledge of these prescription drugs. Hopefully someone more knowledgable can chime in. Best of luck!

Fight for a reduced haldol dosage since it is good practice to prescribe the minimum effective dosage of this drugs and side effects are very severe to such a degree that it may pose your life/health at risk..

Scaling down 20% every 6 months is recommended practice too.

5mg is the very maximum dosage allowed.

I think there are the legal and medical bases to fight the dosage ordered by the court.

Levodopa comes with its own arrays of side effects and I would not recommend long term use.
