Bad response to Pregnenolone - insomnia, m...

permhealing's Photo permhealing 12 Jul 2016

I tried around 5mg of Pregnenolone in total 1 month ago hoping to help with adrenal fatigue.

I got strong dreams and lighter sleep whilst on it.  Then 1 week later I got strong heart palpitations after waking up in the middle of sleep.  Same happened a week later with less intensity.  Then strong insomnia for 2 nights after I developed insomnia after sensitivity to loud sounds (never had this ever before).  My body would also heat up when having heart symptoms, as well as throbbing pulse at other pulse sites.  I did get anxiety during this time too, but now doesn't come up much except for muscle tension.

Then 1-2 weeks later I would get some nights ok sleep and some nights poor.  After 2 nights of ok sleep last week the next 2 nights would be very light together with higher libido (which was mostly absent before taking preg).  I also felt some more emotions and pleasure (which mostly absent before preg).

I think the preg initially caused the anxiety by affecting NMDA, glutamate and gaba receptors permanently.

I am taking magnesium to try to reduce nmda.  I read that dxm and memantine also dopamine agonists so prob won't help my insomnia.

I read that nmda agonists would even help schizophrenic suffers, so really shocked why it gave me such bad response.  I have been in adrenal fatigue for many years though so it could explain why I react more sensitively.

The more recent effects of higher libido are prob due to hypomania being triggered (I have been diagnosed bp2 but haven't had highs for at least 7 years as lost many emotions from stress crashes).

Does anyone think these reactions to preg are all due to the adrenals being depleted so that I am getting excessive stress responses?

Or would it just be that preg permanently made changes to my brain chemistry?

And what would be some good things to deal with the insomnia?

I am currently taking valporate to try lower the mania.  Might try valerian next.

Like you, I've also used it with the thinking that it might help schizos. And like you, it was mostly affective effects it had.

In my case, I am very sensitive to anything serotonergic and it gave me pretty much all the side-effects of taking tryptophan or 5htp, otherwise I would use it. Perhaps you are likewise sensitive to serotonergics? If so, you might've experience sedation or fatigue or excessive sleepiness, or excessive gasping for air, or whatever you experience from 5htp? Serotonin can also mediate the anxious feeling via one of the receptors. For this, l-lysine might help sometimes by working as an antagonist on that specific receptor.

In theory, taking it with boron should increase the libido boosting effects of preg., via increasing progesterone metabolization.

Had pretty much the same reaction from Preg. First several days were great, then further use resulted in extreme irritability and anxiety.

first time I tried it, I tried 5mg, and got a similar reaction. I've been hyper sensitive to pretty much everything since I tried NSI-189. Anything that affects brain function whatsoever: ALCAR, low dose naltrexone, L-tyrosine, caffeine, etc. Sigh..

No I don't think I am sensitive to serotonin, fortunately.  I take 5htp quite frequently for sleep and it helps mostly, but not for long enough throughout the night.

Pretty much after my crashes, I lost alot of emotion and motivation, and became more paranoid of things, which leads to think they gave me leanings towards schiz symptoms.  I hope by addressing the adrenals, the mental things would recover by itself without me needing to take brain supps, as they can be quite risky and hard to figure out what is causing what.

For example I took some choline yesterday after a 3 week break and it gave me anxiety afterwards and lighter sleep at night.  I always thought the parasympathetic system was not excitatory.

Leucine or BCAA before bed for sleep, it works. 5htp can actually disturb sleep because of serotonin.

Pregnenolone withdrawal gave you schiz symptoms? Now that's weird. Sounds obviously like a glutamine-receptor problem.
