Yeah...I got my hands on some organic hot chocolate this winter...man, I threw all the other supermarket ones away.

But the real reason I'm posting is...

What's your l-tryptophan source? I just bought some from iHerb:
L-Tryptophan, Doctor's Best, 500 mg, 90 Veggie Caps

i have a bottle from FTH nutraceuticals, probablay the most expensive one on the market today... but its very very pure, and i get a discount at my work too... so [wis]

any company that makes it an has up to date, THIRD party assays is fine with me... vrp makes it, doctors best is pretty good from what i hear. ide double check into their assay and makes sure its not sent with the batch.

tryptophan & 5htp are two things you do NOT want to risk getting a bad batch of.

have you ever taken tryptophan before? do you know how to take it so it works right?

*EDIT*

here is the link to the doctors best assay... http://us.st11.yimg....b_1884_25283510

the fth stuff is like 99.8% and its checked for peak-X contamination. i would double check to make sure doctors best is checked for peak-X, get it ON PAPER.

Chocolate is already high in tryptophan. What is the health benefit of taking a specific tryptophan supplement?

ajnast4r -

Thanks for that. I saw the CoA for Drs Best before I bought it...and wasn't thrilled with it, but it seemed like they made sure it wouldn't kill me. I much prefer your source.

I took tryptophan back when I was a young guy in the late 80's (yeah I'm older than most on this board who were BORN in the 80's).

It was before the ban. I took it back then because there was something I saw which suggested that the alpha male primates had higher concentrations of typtophan. It was pre Internet (no AARPANET comments please), so

As for now...I just got it to help me fall asleep occasionally (avoiding direct melatonin). Taken on empty stomach (at least no protein to compete) and at night, hoping the ortho-core throughout the day has enough B vits floating around for optimal results.

YIPES~!

PURE L Tryptophan FTH Nutraceuticals 500mg / 120 Capsules -- $81.00

What about 5-HTP instead of L-Tryptophan? Are they even comparable? EDIT: http://www.imminst.o...7978&hl=5htp&s=

supplemental 5-htp is not recomended as there is speculation it can cause heart problems, due to being converted to serotonin in the bloodstream instead of the brain. tryptophan is never converted in the bloodstream.

I take 1-1.5g of L-Tryptophan for two or three nights (away from protein) whenever i start to feel depressed (fairly rare). My subjective experience is feeling happier and relaxed the next day, although it's accompanied by a slight lethargic feeling. Just out of curiousity, I looked up the approximate Tryptophan content of chocolate soymilk, unsweetened baking chocolate, and hot chocolate (cocoa) mix. They are respectively (suggested serving size + some nutritional info): 100mg tryptophan (1 cup = 120 calories, 14g protein, 5g fat, 11g sugar), 170mg tryptophan (1 cup = 661 calories, 17g protein, 69g fat, 1g sugar), 18.5mg tryptophan (28g = 111 calories, 2g protein, 1g fat, 20g sugar).
