translation project (discussion thread)

Matthias's Photo Matthias 05 Mar 2006

ok, let's spread the meme:

In the Agenda 2006 we have the topic
"1f) translation of the text into other languages"

At least we should have a german and a hebrew translation. Some wanted to create a veneto-italian version. Perhaps we could invite them to our action&outreach-subforum, because they will first have to create an english transcript too. So we could do this work together with them.

The proceeding in this "Translation@Home"-project is the same as described in the "Transcript@Home"-project.

- first add a post that contains only the part-ID you want to translate.

- then translate your part

- and finally edit your post an write your translation into it

For the German one, are you running through a translation software/website? Or, are you doing it manually?

:)

manually, because the outcome of the software I know looks very strange or is completely not understandable.

This is a Russian translation of ImmInst film (the first 2 parts for a start):
Transcript:

Film:

Hopefully more Russian-speaking members will find their way here through it. In my experience, the former SU is a very fertile ground for the immortalist movement.
A copy is also uploaded at the ImmInst Russia Forum.

To view Russian, go to “View” – “Encoding” – “Cyrillic (Windows)””

Wow ilia, that's great !!! [thumb]

Hi, Matthias,
Same to you! [thumb]

There seems to be a problem with the Russian translation. Google search doesn’t seem to recognize this text. In other words, one can type in all the key words, even the whole text, and still won’t get to ImmInst site. The same thing sometimes happens with our Hebrew uploads. It doesn’t seem to happen with the German translation. I don’t know what might be the problem, but it could seriously undermine the multi-lingual outreach effort (at least for Russian and Hebrew).

Another point. Later on, we might have to start finding out how to make the actual subtitles (I know there must be some special software for that). Also, we might have to shorten our translations for the subtitles (the reading speed is much slower than listening). But hopefully we’ll get to it.

Now it seems important that Google will recognize Russian and Hebrew texts from the ImmInst site.

PS to my previous post. Ok, today I see that the Russian text is recognized by Google search (and quite high ranking to boot).

As for subtitles, perhaps a multilingual sound track might be a better idea.

Great to see all the translations in progress...

I've added links to the Film site: http://www.imminst.org/film

I had problems to get some google-hits too. But perhaps it's because I have not installed the additional character-sets.

Another point. Later on, we might have to start finding out how to make the actual subtitles

Veneto will use "adobe premiere". I hope it supports other character-sets for the subtitles. He only wants to add subtitles, but I prefer real dubbing. We'll see. (for now I am testing freeware like Cuttermaran v1.67)

Hi everybody.

My name is Javier and I am coordinator of Crionica.org from Spain ( http://www.crionica.org )

We have translated the film into Spanish but we have some doubts. Please, can anyone help me?

I start from last to first and these are the first three.

Thank you very much in advance

Doubt 1)
152 Jerome C. Glenn (Executive Director, American Council for the United Nations University)
start 0:02:00 / 1:36:45
".. . In our cells, think of you...."

Can we replace "think to yourself" instead of "think of you" ?

Doubt 2)
151 Robin Dale Hanson, Ph.D.
start 0:01:15 / 1:35:59
".... What you're fighting for is this image of.. of.. nanotube-people should have about a long future. And that's just fighting for this image world for.. of stories to tell and.. you know.. symbols."

Can it be said or replaced in other words? Easy and grammatically correct if possible.

Doubt 3)
Part-ID 134 Robert Bradbury
start 0:09:46 / 1:27:12
"... Or we do it with outloading-, inloading-, uploading, ..you know, path."

The same as above.
