Niacin makes ya dumb(er)?

tintinet's Photo tintinet 27 Mar 2007

Study

Dietary niacin restriction of rats makes 'em smarter, by at least one criterion,
while supplemental niacin makes 'em dumber! Akkk!

Seems that they used nicotinamide. It would be interesting to know whether nicotinic acid gives similar results.

That nicotinamide sure seems evil. Inhibits SIRT1, makes you dumb, sheez, what is next??? ;)

Do to this Study, I use nicotinic acid daily but in low amounts.

I would have to say that nicotinic acid DOES NOT make one dumber.

How do you conclude as to this being a screw up on AOR's part?

I don't conclude that. But their niacin content is too high considering the possible disadvantages that a high niacin might possess. I don't understand their philosophy on that part.

Ok, I hate to be that dumb guy... but I am a little confused about the different types of niacin. There are lots of different names going around, if someone could clarify them I would be gracious. Names: Niacin (flush and non-flush), nicotinamide, and nicotinic acid.

Maybe I am missing some forms. Further which forms are claimed to 'make one dumber'. Sorry for being a little stupid... I can't figure it out from wiki.

Ok,
Someone just answered my question in another thread.
Flush Niacin = Nicotinic Acid
Non Flush Niacin = Nicotinamide
Then there is also the time released version Niaspan. (Extended Release Flush Niacin) This variety seems to be bad for the ole' liver.

Well Ima keep using nicotinic acid ;)
