Larry King Says He Wants To Be Frozen

Logan's Photo Logan 30 Apr 2011

Yep, that's what he said, and he meant it. He said he never wants to die. If he woke up in 500 years and didn't know anyone he would just make new friends. I saw him talk about this briefly toward the end of an interview that aired tonight on Dr. Drew Pinsky's new show on HLN/CNN.

If he were seriously contemplating this, and he might be, he might see that by actually making arrangements and (perhaps) inspiring donations to research to every organization capable of contributing to more rapid advancement of the science (not just the existing ones but others they might help identify), in one fell swoop he would have eclipsed Howard Huges, Disney, and all the others that in the end were "just talk". And, there's an important additional perspective:

The first person to be almost perfectly suspended by a strategy that anticipated every legal obstacle, every logistic obstacle, every technologicla obstacle, that could be arranged, would in some cases be comparable to the first person to "land on the Moon". At this point, in such a comparison, it may not be known how to "get him back to earth", but at least there would be a lot of time to do it.

Even if Larry King were to have such great health and longevity that he never needed it, he would have "thrown down the gauntlet" in a way that would assure that the spirit of his vision would not just be forgotten, but would spread like the wind. All who saw it might not immediately leap in behind, but they would recognize, from all of thoughtful interviews that Larry King has conducted over the years, that this was the well considered, rational choice of one of humankind's most respected citizens, and it would cause a lot to take a second look at this intriguing possibility, that surfaced so many years ago as a "freeze-wait-reanimate" paradigm and now is on the verge of emergence into being taken seriously as a sensible end-of-life choice.

The argument over whether "cryonics might work" vs. being something that would "be impossible" was answered the moment a frozen embryo not only survived the trip to liquid nitrogen and back, but then produced a one hundred trillion cell adult human being who was not only psychologically normal but whose cells could then go on to produce more hundred trillion cell human beings. After that canyon was crossed, in principle, it was simply a "matter of engineering" (like going to the Moon, or perhaps even more demanding), but the idea that it might be impossible no longer made sense.

Eric Drexler's ideas about nanotechnology and the hurtling forward into advanced technology and information expansion that we see exploding all around us would make this the ideal time for such a step forward by a strongly influential mind like Larry King's. If he had the strength of will and courage to simply respond to any challenges that might arise, that this was a personal choice for each to make, according to his or her own convictions, then he would have spoken out strongly not only for the virtue of pursuing long lives and contributing as much as possible, but for the principle that each of us is entitled to our own beliefs and visions.

There is a CNN Larry King special on right now where he has a variety of celebrities eating a dinner at his house as they talk. It is really a fascinating philosophical sort of discussion and concept, I love it. Russel Brand asked Larry if he wanted to live forever because of his cryonics ambitions and Larry said 'you bet your ass I do'. This is amazing. Like others are saying here this is a really potent bit of publicity for the cause. This could really open things up.

I think it was actually Seth MacFarlane that asked it, it was hard to tell with the way the cameras were switching screens.

Conan said that its not for him, that he wants out. I cant believe that, it was really disappointing. Ive seen some interviews with Conan, and that coupled with his creativity always made him seem like the thinking type to me. All hope isnt lost though, everybody is swayable. When the cause of indefinite life extension takes the world stage then every Conans thoughts will be put to the test with the truth inherent in this cause.

Here he is on "the Talk", some show I've never heard of until now that looks a lot like "the View" saying that he wants to be "cryoniced". I like how the discussion is transitioned into how Russel Brand was looking through his wifes underwear, because thats the important topic right?

He really needs to be contacted by Mind, by current TV, by CI or Alcor, by somebody, and be brought up to par with cryonics. It could make all the difference in the world. We wrote him for the VIP outreach team a few years ago but no response.

"But you wouldnt know anybody when you woke up." Its almost as though by neglecting dialect, logic and philosophy in gradeschools, we havent left people generally ignorant of these concepts, its like they are still in a 1rst graders state of perception when it comes to them. Its along the lines of what you might hear a 1rst grader say if you ask them something like, "Do you think people should go up and explore space?" 1rst grader: "but they wouldnt be able to talk to any of their friends."

He should hurry and sign up, time is running out. I remember watching a Larry King Fm-2030 interview video apparently it made an impact.

Larry King’s announcement that he plans to freeze his dead body and then be resurrected when science finds a cure for what caused his death is not as wacky as it sounds, experts tell Newsmax Health.

Dr. Max More, president and CEO of Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Scottsdale, Ariz., says more and more people with the financial resources are having their bodies cryonically preserved. His organization now holds the frozen remains of baseball great Ted Williams.

Youtube has taken down many of the clips of King talking about Cryonics on "Dinner with the KIngs" and elsewhere. If somebody can, go in and extract the clip where he talks about cryonics and add it to some commentary or something so it is more of a blog piece and less of something that Youtube might take down for copyright infringement.

The Larry King interview of FM2030 a few decades ago might have made the difference, I agree. Maybe he interviewed other indefinite life extensionists as well. But did that interview prompt King to start thinking about this stuff more? If that's the case then does that not lend a good bit of evidence for the power in things like the Longecity Outreach team? We write to people each month for the team. A few of us have stuck with it for years now in part for the team and in part to see if we cant get more of you to join in. We have even been interviewing some people that are new to the cause for the Longecity Now braodcast. There is an outreach challenge running right now. This King FM2030 interview also lends credence to the Longecity Internet Networking Team.
