post-cholecystectomy diet strategies, bile...

tunt01's Photo tunt01 21 Aug 2013

I have a relative who went on an Atkins-like binge for years. Woke up one day and was rushed to ER to have his gall bladder taken out. Today they are asking me to help them w/ feedback on ideal diet strategies for living without a gall bladder (post-cholecystectomy). My questions are as follows:

1. Given that they need bile to process fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) does it make sense to supplement bile salts while simultaneously acknowledging that cholestectomy patients are at substantially higher risk for colorectal cancer (due to continuous flow of bile into the colon, which is pro-cancerous)?

2. Do you think it makes more sense to invest in supplements A, D, E, K and make sure they are optimized without adding bile salts to the diet?

3. What thoughts would you have on the inability to digest essential, healthy fats without a gallbladder? Should the person supplement with some kind of Nordic Naturals 3-6-9 n fatty acid supplement, because they are not absorbing fatty acids properly?

4. What tests would you get to assure proper nutrition?

5. Any other general comments about diet/lifestyle are welcome.

Thanks
