NON-synthetic/xenobiotic nootropics?

ajnast4r's Photo ajnast4r 26 Feb 2006

seems like all nootropics are synthetic or completely xenobiotic... are there any naturally occuring noots?

the only ones i could come across were galantamine & hup-A, both of which i do not beleive are acceptable for daily/long term use in healthy young people because they inhibit acetylcholinesterase...

Naturally occuring without any chemical changes:
Alpha GPC
Vincamine
CDP-Choline
Huperzine A
Galantamine
Vasopressin

Made/based from natural compounds but does not occur naturally:
Vinpocetine
Pyritinol
Idebenone
Piracetam
Deprenyl
Picamilon
Centrophenoxine

Many nootropics are modified vitamin compounds with a remarkable degree of safety.

Vincamine half-life is about 9 hours, while vinpocetine's is 2 and a half. Vincamine has been studied and shown effective in treating dementia, vinpocetine has not.

IIRC Hydergine and Nicergoline were isolated from some sort of fungus.

I believe hydergine, nicergoline and possibly bromo are all synthesized from the infamous ergot fungus.

If no other cerebral vasodilators were taken I would recommend 20-40 mg daily with meals taken in at least 2 doses. Although you may use a 20-40 mg dose at once to increase the chance of seeing an immediate effect.

Why would you want to take vinpocetine if vincamine can do the same thing with a half-life of nine (!!!) hours? Does vinpo have some wonder effects that vincamine can't produce? Also, what dosage would you recommend if vincamine was the only vasodilator used?

From my understanding, vincamine is a more powerful mental stimulant, but vinpocetine increase CBF more.
