Helping Research

Mon Dec 17, 2007 10:05 pm

Saw this story today (pretty cool video by the way), and it made me think about ideas...ideas as to how Imminst can contribute to life extension research. In the back of my mind, thoughts have always been rumbling around as to how Imminst members could leverage their collective talent to help research along. Activism and outreach is our strong point, but maybe we can help with new medical/scientific discoveries. Sure we donated dirt samples to John and the lysoSENS project and many of us donate CPU cycles to folding@home or other relevant distributed computing projects, but it seems like there is something else, something unique, something beneficial to society (and to Imminst) that could be done. Could we help crunch data for specific projects? Could we help write and edit white papers? Could we use new web 3.0 applications and narrow AI in unforeseen new ways? I registered to beta test Twine with the thought that we could use it as an Imminst data tool. Not sure how we could integrate it with the site, but it looked useful. (still waiting for Radar Networks to set me up with a test version).

Anyway, in my previous blog entry I said don't be shy when you have an idea. Throw it out into the forums for everyone to look at. Maybe you have 20 ideas and 19 get shot down. Not to worry, its that 1 golden idea everyone will remember.

I copied your topic and accidentally sent it before responding, this is the edit where I deleted that copy of your topic. Im not sure how to delete this completely, so here it is. Please delete this if you can.

I think the same thing. I find it hard to get people all in together on this type of idea, but I imagine its more my lack of persistence in talking about these ideas, and lack of diligence in reading the forums to find this kind of sentiment rather than it is a lack of reality with in imminst.

These thoughts rumble around in my head too. Although no eureka ideas have come to mind, Im sure there are some out there. Wait no, really, I know there are many out there. I wish I could find a place with in imminst to brainstorm about these kinds of ideas more. Well, by these kinds I mean primarily research like you say, and advertising. Research... sending dirt samples and helping the folding thing, Im glad you put it like that, because those are the only things that have really come to my mind too, and now that you say it like that I see its not so much just my ignorance to the over all picture. It seems like that is pretty much it so far.

Hopefully we, imminst, anybody, can churn out other useful, ingenuous ideas like the folding and direct research help like the dirt samples and stuff, but I guess the only thing that comes to my mind which we already do to, that I think is in dire need of expedition, is the advertising side. How important is it in your mind? More or less than the research? I know that they, like Aubrey, say that the research is important first, because a longer lived mouse will open peoples minds and pocket books, but, of course, people need to know about the mouse, and a general over all hype I think will really create a dramatic tipping into life extensions favor if we get it hyped up for when the time comes.

So basically my idea is probably a lot like or exactly like yours, to throw around ideas, use the best one until better ones come along and go from there.

ok. Mind, Brokenportal, I am throwing around ideas:

I've made a website of my TODO list against aging:

http://www.longevity.be

I made the website for 2 reasons:

1) I don't have the time to do everything simultaneously. Plus it doesn't have to be done by me necessarily: maybe we (/whoever wants) can share the work?

2) to make every longevist (including me) aware of the important projects & organization against aging/death
