From DHEA to 7-Keto... are there really legitimate

I've been looking around for a few athletic powder blends to help give me an edge in my kickboxing workout regimen. One of the independent supplements I am taking is Rhodiola Rosea (625 mg w/ 0.8% rosavins), by Planetary Formulas.

So anyway, in one of these products, which I am thinking about puchasing, contains 7-Keto DHEA. I am understanding that 7-Keto is basically a form of DHEA that does not convert to androgens. However, this claim also seems to be illegitimate, as it is always pushed by its advocates, and that's not to mention that there is a patent on this compound (is that correct?).

I am only 20 years old, so I don't want to be messing around with potientially harmful hormones!

I will browse some more and try to find the exact brand and ingredients of this product. Someone told me that a lot of the famous UFC fighters endorse this product as well.

At 20 you are too young to consider taking supplemental or prohormones.

You should really consider your zinc status. Even a zinc mild deficiency can cause lower testosterone levels.

This includes entire professional football and basketball teams, many amateur and professional bodybuilders, hundreds of Olympic athletes scattered among many different events, karate champions, and even elite tennis players.

By and large, these athletes are people who pay careful attention to their diet, yet the majority are still they are depleted or deficient in zinc."

The body needs sufficient zinc in order to make testosterone. Don't worry about hormones at your age, but do watch your nutrition.

I'm not looking to boost my testosterone level... in fact, i don't want to mess with anything that directly messes with hormones, since i'm still relatively young.

Zinc and magnesium have nothing to do with supplemental or exogensous 7-Keto, basically. But this article explains how taking hormones will only make a zinc deficiency worse.

Additionally, exogenous testosterone administration results in significant reductions of Zn (9).

Both zinc and magnesium supplementation have been shown to significantly decrease the levels of the
catabolic “stress” hormone, cortisol. In a double blind, randomized study of 23 triathletes, serum cortisol
was lower in the magnesium-supplemented group before and after competition compared to controls
(24). The authors concluded that the magnesium supplementation resulted in a reduced stress response
without affecting competitive potential. In addition to increasing the football players anabolic hormone
levels, the ZMA may have had an anti-catabolic effect as well. It would be beneficial to include cortisol
measures in future studies.

Using the right nutrition is not "messing" with your hormones. But using natural adrenal hormones can be risky because there is no way to know what other adrenal hormone you could end up with from that one prohormone. All natural adrenal hormones can be converted into other adrenal hormones by your adrenal glands. There is no way of controlling this process or hormone cascade. Taking 7-keto would be "messing" with your hormones.

Abstract:
Supplemental dehydroepiandosterone (DHEA) has been postulated to have beneficial effects on heart disease, immune function and well-being. However, conversion of DHEA to sex hormones may cause unwanted side effects. 7-Keto-DHEA is a naturally occurring metabolite which has DHEA activity, but is not converted to sex hormones in vivo. The present study examined the effects of 7-keto-DHEA on several endocrine and safety parameters in healthy adult men (18-49 years of age). 7-Keto-DHEA (n=18) or placebo (n=6) were administered for 8 weeks. The 7-keto-DHEA dose was increased weekly to a maximum of 100 mg bid during the final 4 weeks of treatment. Levels of the hormones measured did not differ between groups (p>0.10) at baseline or during treatment. End-of-trial levels of dihydrotestosterone, estradiol, cortisol and insulin were not different from baseline values (p>0.10). A small reduction in total testosterone [601 ± 142 (SD) vs. 554 ± 149 ng/dL, p<0.01] and a small, clinically insignificant, increase in free testosterone [27 ± 5 vs. 31 ± 8 pg/mL, p<0.01] were observed among men receiving, 7-keto-DHEA. All hormone levels were within normal limits. This study shows that 7-keto-DHEA is well-tolerated at doses up to 200 mg/d and does not produce clinically important sex hormone changes in healthy men.

I'm so glad you ask:

In my understanding the path is the following:


DHEA
|
| cytochrome CYP7B1
|
V
7α-hydroxy-DHEA
|
| Oxidation balance (non-encymatic)
|
V
7-oxo-DHEA (= 7-keto-DHEA)
|
| 11β-HSD1
|
V
7α-hydroxy-DHEA
and
7β-hydroxy-DHEA

The result will be lots of amounts of 7β-hydroxy-DHEA, because it's the dead end.

7α-hydroxy-DHEA will reconvert to 7-oxo-DHEA and then again 7α-hydroxy-DHEA and 7β-hydroxy-DHEA.

Just an idea:

Suppress the activity of 11β-HSD1 (e.g (3-(1-adamantyl)-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]azepine Link for suppression or Magnolol Link to magnolol)

Increase the activity of CYP7B1

Then you will have lots of natural 7-keto-DHEA (=7-oxo-DEA)!
