i was reading an article
http://www.medscape....rticle/433387_5

It is now apparent that levodopa toxicity is mediated by oxidative stress as it can be prevented by antioxidants such as ascorbate.[14,17-19]

from what i understand, the main negative side effect is that it causes oxidative (h2o2) damage to dopamine neurons.
would this mean that toxic side effects from l-dopa is prevented by taking vitamin c and/or other antioxidants with l-dopa?
would this render levodopa as safe?

Parkinson's patients taking levodopa actually accelerate
their disease in the long run, as it causes heavy free radical
damage to the substantia niagra region of the brain. This
is why you almost always see these patients deteriorate as
time goes by, when they are treated with conventional drugs
alone like Sinemet (carbidopa/levodopa).

I guess there is no 100% neutralization of this oxidative stress,
but it would surely be minimized with antioxidants which cross
the blood-brain barrier like astaxanthin and ALA, if you plan to
take L-dopa. As for vitamin C, it would be preferable to take the
soluble form, ascorbyl palmitate. Vitamin E too.

Another possible supplement which might help regenerate
neurons is ALCA, acetyl l-carnitine arginate, though ALCAR
causes oxidative stress itself and should be taken with the
other antioxidants.
