Wow. If only I had known this (the fighting hypothesis), when as a young musclebound buffoon I was too uncoordinated to even walk properly let alone dance! It certainly makes sense. And should encourage other prospective buffoons to focus their energies in more socially and personally constructive activities.

No for my seminal question: what is an erumite and what is an oxymath?

(I gather these terms have been made up - but they must mean something, interspersed amongst other words of substance, so to speak)

:)

I hope this works. I've been trying to log on for the last hour and a quarter.

The words oxymath and eumite are made upm, but not by me. They are the products of the mind of the deranged English genius Vivian Stanshall, most famed for being the lead singer of the "Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band". They appear in his masterpiece "The Rawlinsons".

Phew! Looks like I've managed to log in somehow. Can't recall how I did it now, but it was quite a challenge. The button for it was cunningly labelled and hidden.

Hello? Am I actually in the chat room? I suspect not. It is very quiet here. Whenever I click "Enter chat room" it tells me that it cannot reach "irc.lucifer.com" and asks me to try a different server. How do I do this? Is there something I'm doing wrong or is the system down today?

Oh dear, half the hour has gone by already, and still the system does not seem to be working. I have been e-mailing Bruce Klein since 2 pm this afternoon, but have had no replies from him. I've tried the "back up room" but I just get a connection error message. If anyone is reading this and has some clue to what I should do, could they please e-mail me? Nikolas.lloyd@ncl.ac.uk or leave a message here.

Then again, if this IS the chat room, why is no one chatting?

In case you are interested, I finally worked out how to register, by clicking on "full members", and then scrolling all the way down to the bottom of the page that linked to, where I found something called "basic membership", and I clicked on that. It took me quite a while to find this.

So, anything anyone want to ask about evolution?

Well, I've now been trying to get into the chat room for an hour and three-quarters. I've tried typing in every combination I can think of of "6667" "immortal" and "sl4" without any luck. I'm no computer expert, so it may well be true that the solution has been staring me in the face all this time. If this is my fault, then I apologise to all those who logged on hoping to chat to me. Either way, perhaps we can try again some day. I think this chat was meant to last one hour, and that is nearly up, but I shall stay until the end, wrestling with the controls, and trying to think of other ploys of entry.

This message is probably my parting one, I'm afraid. I have noticed that on the page http://imminst.org/chat/ the graphic of the po-up window shows a button labelled "immortal" that I never saw on the windows that popped up for me. Heigh ho - technology eh?
