So for anyone who is interested, I thought I might post my latest blood tests as I have found them to be very interesting.
To give a bit of background to the results, I have been following a fairly strict low-carbohydrate diet with a modern paleo philosophy to it. And by that, I mean no grains, starchs, refined sugars, seed oils and very low amounts of dairy (1-2 servings a week). I have been eating similarly to this for about two years. This year, I have also included larger serving of saturated fat and have been megadosing fish oil to correct an EPA:AA imbalance. I have also added a daily glass of red wine and 2 cups of decaf+filtered coffee.
I have also been doing a crossfit-style workouts, three times a week with some friends in the park.
And here are the results, presented as last years blood test -> this years blood test
Total cholesterol: 4.6 -> 4.5 (Range: 3.5-5.5)
Trigs: 0.6 -> 0.5 (Range: 0.5-2.0)

LDL cholesterol: 2.4 -> 2.2 (Range:
Lp(A): 0.41 -> 0.33 (Range: <30)
ApoA1: 1.66 (Range: 0.90-1.80)
ApoB: 0.54 (Range: 0.7-1.3)
Homocysteine: 7 -> 9 (Range: 6.0-15)
HBA1C: 4.7 -> 5.2 (Range: 4.0-6.0)
Vitamin D: 96 -> 161 (Range: 75-250)
Fasting Insulin: 3.9 -> 5.9 (Range: 0-17)
Testosterone: 23.1 -> 38.2 (Range: 12.0-31.9)
SHBG: 46 ->46 (Range: 21-57)
cFreeTestosterone: 394 -> 743 (Range: 260-740)
IGF-1: 24 (Range: 24-102)
My initial thoughts are:
- I am incredibly happy with my lipid results, my Lp(A) has plummeted and my ApoA1/B ratio is great
- My hormone profile is quite amazing, I assume this is an excellent result to see unless anyone has reason to believe this may be a bad thing?
- My glucose/insulin markers were pretty disappointing. Considering, if anything, my carbohydrate intake has dropped and I have been engaging in regular, high intensity exercise. This is pretty surprising to me. One potential reason I have thought of is that I have been taking 100mg of niacin in the hopes of pushing my HDL up, niacin has a known effect of messing with insulin sensitivity.
- My homocystieine has risen, I think this may be due to the fact that I have started drinking coffee. I believe it is the cholergenic acid in coffee that raises homocysteine.
-My IGF-1 is very low considering my high protein intake.
These are the interesting numbers that I have received but if anyone is interested I have attached my full blood work.
Any thoughts/reflections? Particularly regarding ways to improve my fasting insulin?
