Colon Cancer Prevention

Dear Community,

I'm 25 and have a family history of several sorts of cancer, mostly colon cancer.

Do you have any advise on supplements (+ nutritional targets) that could be implemented in a supplement regime?

I understand that supplements can not substitute regular check ups with a doctor.

To get an idea what I allready eat and supplement with you may have a look at this topic.

From what I know Vitamin D3 benefits in the reduction of colon cancer.
Flax Seeds were thought to aid in colon cancer prevention but those claims are in doubt recently.

Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Cephalon,

Curcumin is an ingredient found in Turmeric and yellow curry preparations that is known to have an anti-cancer effect. The consumption of yellow curry is though to be one reason Indians have low incidences of colon cancer. If you do supplement it, Piperine, is a co-supplement that has been shown to increase bioavailability. Cooking preparations may be the best form to combat colon cancer.

thank you for your reply!
I supplement with 800mg tumeric extract a day allready, though I think about adding a serving of broccoli with tumeric to my diet.
I think both of them have anti cancer properties.

Diet is probably the most important factor in limiting colon cancer risk. High amounts of saturated fat, animal fats, and polyunsaturated fats all correlate strongly with inducing colon cancer. The balance of fats is important. Omega-3s are protective and large amounts of Omega-6 can induce it. A high fiber diet will reduce the risk further. One other supplement you may consider is brewers yeast.

Could you briefly elaborate why you think brewers yeast may have anti cancer benefits?
Are you refering to the B-Vitamin complex expecially B12 or Beta Glucan.
Currently I'm supplementing with Jarrow's Mushroom Optimizer for beta glucan beside other nutrients

Wikipedia says this about phytic acid -

Sorry for replying so late. Brewers yeast may be effective due to its selenium content. This the same reason broccoli is thought to be effective. And brewers yeast may have an overall cancer preventative function linked to its nutrition profile. It is high in most amino acids and essential minerals.

@Sillewater: thanks for your input, insoluble fiber and curcurmin is already part of my daily nutrition/supplement regime, but I will definately add more fiber to my diet. I did not know that IP6 has a connection to colon cancer but afer a short google search im convinced I need to look more into this!

@enfield: thanks for your post on phytic acid aka IP6, i will definately look into this. I tried so many supplements in the past, I ordered almost the complete vitacost.com range but for some reason I never considered IP6 :)

@InVeritate: thank you for your reply, no need to excuse, I just came to visit my own post now as well :) I allready supplemented with yeast once, but I remember swallowing around 10 pressed yeast capsules a day as suggested dose, so it would be great if I'd find a way to meet this with nutrition some how ... I actualy like the taste of fresh yeast, but I suppose it is not the best to eat massive amounts of living yeast (?)

Take a vitamin D serum test and make sure your level is toward the high end. Everyone reacts differently to Vitamin D supplements, so don't assume that you're getting enough just because you're popping a Vitamin D supplement every day...you could easily require a much higher dose than most people.

I have read studies of green tea that show that it helps prevent color cancer so look into that as well. Green tea extract is pretty cheap...one pill can amount to many cups.
