A few people tend to drink a glass or two glasses of whine from time to time. What I am curious about is if alcohol itself (on a minimum level) has any real health benefits?

I usually don´t drink. But I like whine, whiskey and a a few liqours that goes well with coffee and dark chocolate which I usually eat and drink on the weekends.

So is there any benefit in drinking minimal amounts once a week or two?

Moderate alcohol consumption has pros and cons. Enough "pros" that one of the most health conscious people I know (warning: illogical appeal to authority) - Michael Rae, drinks wine.

The thing is, if you eat something like dark chocolate (well proven health benefits), and drink coffee (well proven health benefits) along with your alcohol, you are probably having a relaxing enjoyable experience, and it is that mood, that relaxation, that positive vibe, that does more for your health than anything else. Once a week or two, is not going to hurt you, IMO.

The evidence seems all over. My personal interpretation is red wine in small amounts may be good for the heart, but perhaps not so good for the brain, mouth, throat... There may be something special about ethanol in combo with certain fruit components. I don't think anyone knows. We've consumed it for millions if years -- ancestors knew ground water was contaminated and fermented fruits were a better source of hydration. Plus makes everyone happy and silly. Was it Homer Simpson who said all of life's problems and solutions may be solved by alcohol?

There have been numerous studies that are all over the map as has been previously said; my favorite being a study done on mice showing a 5% max lifespan increase. But you can find studies that justify any position that you want here.

Bottom line: if one or two drinks a day are going to make all those days in you long life better then go for it; otherwise don't go out of your way.

I barely drink because of my diet. But I do enjoy a glass or two in the weekends. My perception has been that a minimal drink once a week can actually serve health when it comes to wellbeing, skin, cardiovascularity, the immunesystem and even longevity. Although I can´t prove this for sure but all in all, it doesn´t seem unhealthy as long as I don´t get myself hammered.
