Dad's got very much worse over the last year. From occasionally having trouble remembering things, to (now - over the last year) me not being able to understand what he's saying (and him having to be hospitalised occasionally because he doesn't seem to behave rationally..) What could (anything?) help? He's 80 years old. Was a committed smoker for 50+ years (not smoked for 10 or 15 years now). I believe he's had a number of mini-strokes and a TIA.

I can't remember now if I heard about Cerebrolysin here first or somewhere else. I have read about 32 pages of the 'Cerebrolysin' thread (still working on it!) There were some interesting posts early on about Cerebrolysin's use to slow/stop vascular dementia, but not a lot. He's about to be put in a 'home' (here in the UK) because mum can't handle him. It'll be devastating for her.

Any thoughts - anything at all..?

Thanks.

CERE should DEFINITELY help some. You should at the minimum try a 6 weeks course of 30ml (or more) daily CERE IV (5 days on 2 days off) , along with a good B vits complex, a cerebral vasodilator, maybe R-ALA (used in some CERE protocols) and I would definitely add DHA + uridine + citicoline.
Vasodilators to consider : ginkgo, nicergoline, maybe hydergine, vinpocetine...
There is definitely enough evidence to warrant a CERE trial (at least it's side effects free)

Also, have you checked his oxygen saturation? If low (even only under 95%) you should definitely consider some oxygen supplementation at least at nighttime, my grandmother definitely improved in every way with this.

EDIT
Some study found that the cognitive improvements were even better when CERE was given along with the cholinesterase inhibitor donepezil (they have a synergistic effect), but then you should be careful supplementing with choline sources I guess.

Wow! Thanks for all that!

A couple of things I should point out.. I can only visit them a couple of times a year. Mum can just about manage to get him to take his sleeping pill (by mashing it up). I don't know (can't remember) the legal status of Cere, but I know when I told mum to mention it to the doctors, all she got were blank looks). We have a meeting next week to decide/get told what'll happen to him (home/'HOME'/or hospital). I think mum'll need help if dad comes (goes) home.

Sorry....I'm a waffling a bit. Must get some sleep.
