The US Government has spent itself into a corner.  Now it will begin a series of desperate maneuvers to take whatever it can from US citizens.  Suddenly they are confiscating tax refunds for Social Security "overpayments" decades ago to people's parents.  These were payments made on to the children and spouses of people who died prematurely, leaving their descendants to live on Social Security Survivors Benefits.

In a similar move, Riverside County, California is going after the grown children whose families once received need-based assistance for "overpayments."

These debts do not look legal to me.  If these overpayments are even real, why are they only being discovered now?

You can arrange not to have a tax refund by changing your tax withholding.

The Social Security Administration is rethinking this policy due to bad publicity and pressure from some Congresspeople.  If they'd do this though, they may come up with another pretext to take your tax refund next year.
