I started taking garlic supplements a few months ago to boost my immune system.

Little did I know it would also lower my blood pressure by ~20 points.

This is good because the past 2 years my blood pressure has increased to a level it has never been at before, which scares me.

Seems my blood pressure has now progressively lowered as I've continued using the garlic supplement. (Supposedly there are about 8 cloves worth of garlic in one pill). This decrease has happened for systolic and diastolic pressure. I'm happy about that!

If I could mention any "side effect", I do think my blood might be thinned, as I hear a whoosing in my ears these days. Not like it bothers me in the least bit.. nor can I really say that ear whooshing sound is really from my blood thinning. Though garlic is a known blood thinner.

brand: natural standards

name: Garlic rich

type: super strength garlic concentrate

I got good results from it first time around so continued using it. I haven't really tried many others.

I guess a person could just eat a bunch of garlic though it will probably make them smell bad and it'd be a bit irritating going in ,...

"Blood thinner" is not accurate, as you know. Your blood does not really get thinner, it is just less prone  to coagulate.

Whoosing may be due to vasodilation, though.

After reading this thread, I purchased some Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract (AGE):

http://iherb.com/Wak...60-Caplets/3926

- I took my first dose yesterday.

- Shockingly (OK, maybe I'm easily shocked), overnight it has kicked my systolic blood pressure (I do three readings & take the average) from around 120-125, to around 115, giving me a "perfect" reading of 115/75 this morning.

Just to give my background:

- Around a year ago, I noticed my blood pressure was consistently in the upper end of the "prehypertension" range (120-139 mmHg systolic, 80-89 mmHg diastolic).

- research suggests that outcomes for people with prehypertension are not pleasant

- I've implemented the following measures to get my BP into a healthier (?) range

1) weight loss - my BMI is now under 20

2) gentle aerobic exercise - walking to work and back, 5 days/week (around 10000 steps in a day)

3) HIIT, high intensity interval training, on a stationary bike for 30 minutes, a minimum of 3 times/week (I do the "Lifesprints" program). This has lowered my resting heart beat by around 10 to 60.

4) Supplements - Pycnogenol, Meganatural BP, Magnesium (I take other supplements; these ones I've found to help somewhat with BP).

5) Telmisartan, 80 mg/day

6) Stopped adding salt to my food. I add small amounts of potassium salt to soups etc.

7) Whey protein, 20 grams/day

- The above measures have brought my average readings to: 120-125 systolic, 70-75 diastolic. My diastolic BP will rarely if ever read over 80 now; but my systolic BP is still around 10 points higher than is (possibly, arguably) ideal.

- This morning (day 2 on the garlic extract) my first systolic BP reading measured 109. It rose to 115 later in the morning (after I'd been bustling about the kitchen etc but before I'd consumed any coffee, supplements or drugs).

- It will be interesting to see if this BP lowering effect holds over the coming days, and weeks.

I've added a pic showing the surprising effect of Kyolic AGE on my BP readings for the past several days. Since the addition of 2 gm Kyolic aged garlic extract to my daily regimen, my systolic BP has plummeted to around 105-110 mmHg, something I wasn't expecting... supposedly, while Kyolic AGE can produce big drops in BP in people with hypertension, in more or less normotensive individuals it will typically produce a drop of just a few points. (In other words, it doesn't typically induce hypotension). I wonder if - with me - it is allowing the telmisartan to work more effectively? I could perhaps now experiment with halving the telimisartan dose, or maybe drop it altogether. (I don't want to stop the telmisartan entirely - subjectively I feel healthier when I am on it).
