Having read upon niacinamide's beneficial effects, I started taking it as a potential replacement for niacinamide riboside. Although research papers note that NAMPT (enzyme for converting niacinamide into a NAD intermediate) declines with age, I have been able to witness niacinamide's positive effects on my body (without going into details). I have also tried niacin, but flushing was annoying. I am 52, btw.

After 6 months of niacinamide administration (500 mg x 3 daily), I added 250 mg niacin 3 x daily. Surprisingly, I no longer get flushing from niacin. I also noticed a boost from taking niacin (in terms of my exercise performance).

Finally, I have added niacinamide riboside to the stack (250 mg x 2 daily). However, it seems that its effect is overshadowed by niacin and niacinamide - I can detect nothing. I am thinking that the salvage pathways interlink all three vitamin b3 substances, and thus, the combination of niacin and niacinamide is sufficient - rendering niacinamide riboside unnecessary. Unfortunately, of course, I have no way of objectively verifying this (e.g., tissue samples).

Has anyone else tried to use niacin and/or niacinamide as a cheap replacement for niacinamide riboside? If so, has anyone else found that niacinamide riboside does not add much?

I find both niacinamide and niacin good. I'd be interested to try nicotinamide riboside, maybe I will report back soon.

Skyguy005 - that paper you cited in the thread "Nicotinamide Riboside" is a really good one. It doesn't resolve the question whether NAM would still work in older folks who have low NAMPT, but still a darn good paper. It shows that for many, NAM can be effective, and in some instancesr may be even better than NR when neuronal issues are involved. It has the potential to save people lots of $$$.
