How do we decide things, part II

Posted by thughes , 31 March 2008 - - - - - - · 781 views
Random Philosophical Meandering
Here's a good example of why the current propensity of people to educate themselves on a subject, distrust experts, and 'decide for themselves' can be a threat to life to other people: The famous anti-vaccination debate, of which the below is a typical...

Grail~Search has a very beautiful blog layout

I'd like to congratulate the author on being way more artistic than me.

Man, I think I may have to steal some of those ideas...

Life Extension and Transhumanism
That would be here: http://www.imminst.o...ize-t20898.html

Its sad that the hardware site my husband posts on (HardOCP) beats an actual life extension group by such a large margin, something must be done!

On Real Names and New Front Pages

Posted by thughes , 16 March 2008 - - - - - - · 761 views
Personal
The new imminst front page was rather inspiring, and far too formal for a blog named "Mey Talks To Herself".  To fit in with the new look, I renamed my blog to "Mey's Worldview".  A bit more formal...

There's been a discussion in the forums on the benefits of using real names.  I'm reluctant to switch for a couple of...

How do we decide things?

Posted by thughes , 05 March 2008 - - - - - - · 903 views
Random Philosophical Meandering
With increasing education levels, increasing scientific knowledge, increasing availability of information, and the media, its apparently become more difficult for a large population to decide things. You'd think things would have gotten better, but all this information seems to be confusing the issues as much as being enlightening.

If we wanted to...

The perils of citric acid allergies

Have you ever tried to find soaps and shampoos without citric acid in them?

I have a topical allergy. Well ok, I get a histamine reaction when I eat things with citric acid too, but thats easier to live with. As long as I limit my intake. Citric acid == itchy breakout after showering. This appears to run in my family.

Completely Off Topic Cool Things
There's a lot of info out there nowadays, more than a normal mind can process, especially if its outside of your career.  But, searching for info on the web or in books when you need it and have forgotten it can be a needle-in-haystack issue, especially if the keywords you need to use are common.

To help myself remember all the little details I find...

Perfect for gamers who are always miskeying.  Also perfect for anyone who is quadriplegic, or has any disease relating to inability to use their hands reliably, like Parkinsons.

Now, imagine combining this...

Folding@Home is a cool place to start

Life Extension and Transhumanism
I recently joined (under the name thughes, yay for being consistent).

Sometimes, if you aren't a biologist or medical professional, and are just starting out, its difficult to know where to start to make a contribution. For those in this boat, I highly recommend Folding@Home (the Longevity Meme team is 32461). It doesn't cost anything and is very...

My Life Extension Program

Not that I'm suggesting this for emulation, being as I'm (a) conservative (b) lazy and © not (yet!) rich enough to afford 1000$ a month in supplements.

My current supplement program

This is for a mid-30s person.  Well, 2 mid-30s people, although my husband frequently asks which one is the...
