I recently joined (under the name thughes, yay for being consistent).
Sometimes, if you aren't a biologist or medical professional, and are just starting out, its difficult to know where to start to make a contribution. For those in this boat, I highly recommend Folding@Home (the Longevity Meme team is 32461). It doesn't cost anything and is very easy to run, and you are making an actual contribution to a big research problem. Of course, because the problem is so big results will not be fast, but there won't be any results at all if no one works on it.
For me, I work from home logged into a server. So, 99% of my computer is unused during the working day. It makes sense to do something with it.
For a nice overview of what Folding@Home is used for see here: http://folding.stanf...English/Science
Be aware that the stats on the site do not update immediately. I didn't show up as part of the Longevity Meme team until after my first work unit was complete. This took a few days.
