On Real Names and New Front Pages

Posted by thughes , 16 March 2008 · 753 views

Personal
The new imminst front page was rather inspiring, and far too formal for a blog named "Mey Talks To Herself". To fit in with the new look, I renamed my blog to "Mey's Worldview". A bit more formal...

---

There's been a discussion in the forums on the benefits of using real names. I'm reluctant to switch for a couple of reasons:

(1) No one knows me enough to attach my pseudonom to my real name yet,
(2) I'd probably answer to Mey faster than Tracy in real life by now, since its been my online handle for almost 10 years, and I spend a large amount of time online.

However, for the curious here's who I really am:

My actual name is Tracy Hughes. I was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, far enough outside the city to have miles of forest behind the house, conveniently in a community with another Tracy Hughes one year younger than me. There weren't even any discerning physical characteristics... both thin and smaller with long brown hair. So if you ever hear anything weird about a Tracy Hughes from Halifax, it was that other person...

My mother is from Shediac New Brunswick (lobster capital of the world), so I spent a lot of my summers running around the miles of sand bars rescuing skates and jellyfish, and the rest in the woods making paths and forts, collecting tadpoles and ants. We had a sandpile in the back yard with nice clingy sand that made good fortresses in which to keep tiny toads for a few days.

My father emigrated from Britain when he was 14. There are 2 marriages between the 2 families, and a lot of us live in the same community still.

I have a younger brother who is currently studying to get into law school. Previously he worked in the props department of an Ontario theatre, where his significant other was head of wardrobe. When he's a rich lawyer I'll get him involved in Life Extension too...

I'm married to Stan Drake, whom I met online during the days of the MUDs (prior to nice visual games like World of Warcraft). He's a few years younger than me (yay me!), I'm 37, he's 35, we've been together 14 years. We're both graduates of the computer science program at Dalhousie University. I also have an undergrad in mathematics, woefully underused. What I like about both programming and math is the instant gratification: solve a problem, feel smart, voila!

I've been involved in life extension for at least 12 years now, although I can't say I'm doing much yet. As of now:

- We've been Life Extension Foundation members for about that time.
- I joined as a member here
- I am 'thughes' on folding@home

I'm hoping to add somewhat to this resume over the next few years, eg. I hope this year to start up a regular monthly donation to SENS (and another to doctors without borders, as that too is a form of life extension, for other people).

Healthwise, I'm normally healthy but afflicted with lots of little allergies, including an unusual allergy/intolerance to citric acid. This year is not so good, I blame Cipro! Maybe I'll write that whole story sometime. Life is good right now though, man I love the weather in North Carolina.

For those who play World of Warcraft I'm Meyusa on Zul'Jin (and myriad alts).

- Mey/Tracy

People may take your name as being a real one. What about other names? I didnt see the discussion in the forums, but I lean toward using real names too. or at least good face shots. Which of I need to get.
