I can take over 1gram of oxide or citrate and have zero problems with diarrhea. On the other hand i get extremely tired from magnesium / d3 supplementation. What gives?
High dose magnesium doesn't give me diarrhea - a sign of deficiency?

It depends on the form.
Are you taking Magnesium citrate?
That's the one most commonly cited as giving said symptom.
I personally take Magnesium Malate as it is a great all purpose form and is great for ATP production.

I doubt it's a sign of deficiency. Everyone's body, and gut, processes things differently. For example, some people can go to Taco Bell without having diarrhea. You can have tons of magnesium without having diarrhea. I wouldn't look too much into it.

I use to get severe diarrhea while taking magnesium citrate, but now that I have Lyme and co-infections I can take 2grams of it and my crap is still hard as a rock.

Which magnesium malate brand do you use? I want to buy Swanson's but I've heard their magnesium citrate was extremely high in lead and arsenic, which has me worried. The problem is their product does not have binders and fillers like other magnesium malate products do. Are there any good brands without the fillers and binders?
I didn't know mag. malate was good for ATP production. I personally take creatine for that.

From where do you get that kind of information - i.e that Swanson's MgCitrate contains high level of lead and arsenic?

Consumerlab and Labdoor. Compared to the various other brands Swanson was the worst. And my alarmist statement was a bit of an overkill. It wasn't extremely high in heavy metals, just not the lowest compared to other brands.

I have a subscription to ConsumerLab, and am looking at their magnesium section right now. Swanson isn't mentioned anywhere. Also, looking at the list of every Swanson product that they have tested (22 in total), magnesium is not among them.

It's the malic acid in this particular form of Magnesium that is good for ATP.
I take the source naturals brand. It's cheap, high in elemental magnesium and you can vary your dose if you want to.
I know nothing about swansons brand having any impurity issues. I would email them.

I do have deficiency shown in whole blood magnesium tests, hair tissue mineral analysis, and most convincingly by getting muscle-cramps by supplementing to little since 7 years. At the moment I'm supplementing at 2.2 gram elemental magnesium per day without diarrhea, however had periods with stomach upset whenever increasing the dose.
In the beginning I tried all better available Mg compounds (citrate, glycate, malate, ascorbate, threonate, sulfate, etc.), however during that long time-period found that it doesn't matter which one, as long as the elemental Mg content remained high enough. Also no difference to oxide.
