We (OpenAI) have reviewed progress in the field over the past six years. Our conclusion is near term AGI should be taken as a serious possibility.

Recursive self-improvement should produce some significant results eventually. Hopefully there is some oversight.

I support the banning of this technology until we can accurately ascertain what it will effect and how. It's pretty fucking stupid just to development for the sake of implicit development. The pace of development is going faster than humans can adapt and this isn't a good thing. Absolute efficiency isn't absolute happiness and their is no equivocation between the two.

I agree. Narrow AI and expert systems are already proven to be dangerous, even when implemented under supervision. AGI would be worse. I understand the curiosity and excitement of developing AGI, however, this should be somewhat restrained while we perfect narrow AI to be more helpful toward the plight of humans and the planet. Narrow AI can already help us solve a lot of issues on the planet and it is not as dangerous.

I agree; the risks of developing AGI are just too great. We aren't so desperate (yet) that we need it to survive. Why not simply improve Narrow AI and slowly integrate it with human intelligence so that the eventual AGI that appears will at least be part human?
