The hypomagnesemia and zinc deficiency associated with chronic alcoholism may exacerbate the neurotoxicity that is mediated by NMDA receptor because both magnesium and zinc are negative modulators of NMDA receptor func- tion (60). However, magnesium supplementation does not reduce withdrawal sever-

ity or the likelihood of seizures or delirium (46). The clinical relevance of the deranged zinc metabolism is uncertain (62).

So what does?

Librium/Valium/benzo's.

Don't start on these unless you're ready to give up alcohol for good though...  Co-addiction to benzo's and alcohol has killed a lot of people!  Whitney Huston, Thomas Kinkade, Amy Winehouse, to name a few.

Benzo's are the antidote to alcohol withdrawal, but they are a very bad mix when combined.
