Today this world became a darker place for everyone in it.
Today at around 7 this morning my grandfather died taking all his amazing life's experience with him. He did not have a cryonics contract. He was not alone at all for the last week

He was born to Russian parents in coal country in Pennsylvania. His father was a coal miner, but after one summer's work in the coal mines as a teenager my grandfather decided it was not for him(his father didn't have a shred of problem with this). He didn't go to college but he worked as an engineer on aircraft nonetheless. Because of this in the beginning of world war II before the US had entered the war he was selected to be part of a secret unit in north Africa that repaired and constructed aircraft for the British while constantly having to flee before Rommel, The Desert Fox. At the end of the war he was trained to be in the counter intelligence core, and at the end of the war he tracked down Nazi commanders and generals to face justice before the tribunal. I remember one story he told me of one general he was taking in. He told me he this general was very polite, and had only one concern, his 15 year old daughter. He wanted to make sure she was not hurt by the allied soldiers, to this effect my grandfather looked after her.

After he came back home he married my grandmother. He worked hard his whole life, and he later bought much of the mountain in PA that his family originally lived on. He has 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 6 great grand children. He was a very wise and a very strong man, and at the end his wits were about him. He was never religious, but had accepted his fate long ago before.

As I said the world is a darker place.

It's times like these

we all need to

articulate our fear

and systematically

eliminate it

I understand how powerful and wise our current crop of grandfathers are, and I'm sorry for your loss.

...some of his light still shines through you... small consolation for the vacuum left in the world by his leaving it.

Both of my grandfathers have died and one grandmother. I use the sorrow I find in their absence as a reminder of what we're trying to achieve.

my condolences Justin

elrond, sounds like your grandfather had a great life. Try not to grieve to much, he's only going to the next dimension.

He sounds like a remarkable man who lived his life well. Small consolation as it is, part of his genome survives in you. May you also do great deeds. My condolences Justin.

For each life that goes out it is a hundredfold more painful to those that know that it need not - and soon will not - be so.

I am so sorry, Justin... We speak of death so easily, then everytime it gives us the shudder when it gets to us and our beloved ones. We must fight this.

Yours

In a world of infinite possibility, your grandfather was a wonderful actuality.

My condolences also Justin.

Your grandfather has had quite an interesting life. It is sad to see death has laid claim to him.
