Healthy female of child bearing age, compound heterozygous MTHFR. Mostly paleo/very little processed food. I often wake up at night and rarely get more than 5-6 hours sleep and would like to improve on that. Melatonin?

I had amalgam fillings removed 18months ago - after being quite sick for 3 months (though I was going to die) my sleep and energy levels have improved greatly since but there is room for improvement, currently looking at mild chelating agents. Any help appreciated.

For aluminium I'm currently researching silica but not sure if I should go for Biosil or Monomethylsilanetriol (which is cheap enough as it's produced here in Ireland) Also drinking Volvic every day.

Also considering adding Iodine since Ireland still fluoridates water.

500mg Vitamin C: Now C-500 complex with Bioflavonoids, acerola and rose hips (I split these and take half in the morning and half at night)

100mg Kaneka Ubiquinol: Healthy origins natural ubiquinol - should I switch to a cheaper form and take 200mg?

25,000 IU Viamin A: Now Vitamin A from fish liver oil (I cycle these every other week, in combination with B vits and Omegas this gives me beautiful skin, is it too much?)

5000 IU D3: Dorctor's Best - From October until June ( I live in Ireland, no possibility to get any D3 in winter, I only get Sun in the summer on holidays)

3g cod liver oil/750mg Omega-3: Nordic naturals Arctic cod liver oil, I often forget to take these.

280mg Magnesium Malate: source naturals (at night)

1 caps of various multi strain probiotics

100mg Pycnogenol: healthy origins

150mcg molybdenum (to help detox mercury)

100mcg Vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7): Healthy origins (every other day)

10mg Lutein:NOW

B-Complex: Jarrow B-right :

- Thiamin (as thiamin mononitrate 25 mg

- Riboflavin 25 mg

- Niacin (as nicotinic acid) 25 mg

- Niacin (as nicotinamide) 100 mg

- Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine HCl) 25 mg

- Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal 5- phosphate) 10 mg

- Folate (as Quatrefolic (6S-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid glucosamine salt) 400 mcg

- Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin) 100 mg

- Biotin 100 mcg

- Vitamin B5 (as calcium D-pantothenate 100 mg

- Choline (as choline bitartrate) 50 mg

- Pantethine (vitamin B5 derivative) 25 mg

- Inositol 50 mg
I would like to find a different B-complex. Too much methyl-folate gives me anxiety wether in pill or smoothie form. Thoughts as to why that could be?

1000 IU hydroxocobalamin I inject it every 2 months (Not deficient but it seems to improve my sleep- bough over the counter in Germany)

I also take glycine and inositol powders when I wake up at night which helps.

Any critique greatly appreciated :)

For sleep I switch between several aids, maybe it's my imagination, but effect wanes over time. I don't want to take more than ~1 mg melatonin as it's a hormone.

  • 1 mg (or less) melatonin (sublingual) / seems to work more reliably and quickly than melatonin tablets. Helps getting to sleep quickly, but not staying asleep after several hours.
  • Valerian root 1.6 grams / works well, but directions suggest for max 2 weeks usage. Works quite well.
  • Somnapure (half dose) - Valerian 250 mg, L-Theanine 100 mg, Chamomile Flower Extract 25 mg, Passion Flower Extract 25 mg, Lemon Balm Extract 150 mg, melatonin 1.5 mg  / ok, but not great for staying asleep
  • Youtheory Sleep - Magnesium 200 mg, L-Glycine 4 grams, L-Tryptophan 250 mg, L-Theanine 200 mg, L-5-HTP 100 mg, Melatonin 0.3 mg / Powder mix with juice - good for min 6 hrs sleep, my current favorite

I also had amalgam fillings removed several years ago, maybe it helped my health, but it certainly helps how my mouth looks

for sleep try 6 grams glycine and/or 10 grams collagen just before bed. It releases HGH which both helps to repair your body and makes your drowsy.

For chelation, listen to me. If you suspect mercury dont listen to these blog people and their wacky suggestions. Get some DMPS, take it consistently 3x day, with breaks here and there. Nine hour half life, take once every 8 hours. DMPS is over the counter in the EU so you should be able to find some. I have studied this and DMPS, DMSA and lipoic acid are the only true mercury chelators with DMPS being the only one that can penetrate cells and it chelates at about twice the rate of DMSA

You can find some DMPS in small dose such as 1.5 mg or 5 mg per. Start off there.

 Thank you Phoebus.

I have collagen here so will try that.

For chelation is that the cuttler protocol you recommend but with DMPS?I have been considering it but I'm a bit scared. Where can I find out more?

yes its basically the cutler method but many cutler advocates dont understand how superior DMPS is to DMSA and will tell you they are 1:1 interchangable, no not true. MOst of these studies were not even done when cutler put together his protocol and he didn't keep up with the literature while he was alive. Try the "frequent dose chelation" yahoo group for more info. I will say this, they know the science on hair testing for mercury better than anyone else.

Starting out at 1.5 mg every 8 hours is pretty simple, very little to fear.  Lipoic acid and DMPS make a nice pairng since LA will pass the BBB. But the cutler people will tell you to take the LA every 2-3 hours, including getting up in the night to do it, which I think is not practicle.

I'd also recommend Ginkgo Biloba as an all purpose neuroprotector. It doesn't do much for sleep directly but I find it is anti-stress. However I heard it was banned in Ireland, which would be a shame (would probably stop me going there).

Where is DMPS available in Europe? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

You might look into B-minus. It's a B-complex, but without folate or B-12:
