5 HTP (and more) sleep supplement opposite...

JJ94's Photo JJ94 18 Oct 2018

Hi all,

I've started on a new "sleep aid" supplement that I bought off of amazon which has had the opposite effect... containing the following ingredients:

Magnesium (112mg)

5-HTP (90mg)

L-Tryptophan (100mg)

and some other ingredients in smaller doses:

Montmorency Cherry

Grape Skin Extract

Watermelon extract

Chamomile

L-Taurine

Biotin

The problem is, before taking the supplement I had been sleeping really well for months. I only bought this supplement because I wanted to start taking L-Tyrosine and 5-htp for anxiety/irritability and general mood balance and this supplement supplied a lower dose compared to other supplements.

I take the L-Tyrosine supplement during the day with no negative effects, however I take the "neuro rest" supplement 30 minutes before I go to bed and it does make me sleepy, and generally I can get to sleep (although not as easy), the main problem is it wakes me up in the middle of the night and I struggle to get a full night sleep, so it's having an adverse effect on my sleep. I have only been taking this supplement for 4 or 5 nights now, but I had been sleeping well for months now and this is the only thing that I've changed.

I take a couple of other supplements, probiotics, vit b complex and N-Acetyl Glucosamine and i'm also on low dose of beta blockers, not sure if that would have an effect on 5htp?

Any opinions or anyone else had a similar effect?

To my understanding serotonin Is more of a day time neurotransmitter. Why not supplement with melatonin instead?
