Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that it has completed all process technology development and has started wafer production of its revolutionary process node, 7LPP, the 7-nanometer (nm) LPP (Low Power Plus) with extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology.

A big step in technological progress. EUV has been a long time coming in the fabrication industry.

Things are getting interesting. China's SMIC has also ordered EUV equipment from ASML and are set to receive it in 2019.

TWINSCAN NXE:3400B  is rated at 125 wafers per hour (that has to be thousands of chips per hour). Anyone interested in a group buy?  :)

Not sure if a lot of people understand how big of a deal it is to move down to 7nm.

Not sure if a lot of people understand how big of a deal it is to move down to 7nm.

 

 

Samsung is expecting a 40 percent power and 37 percent area reduction from its 7nm FF+ EUV  (compared to it's current 10nm chips). We should also expect 70% better pattern fidelity versus current 193nm ArF immersion scanners (EUV lithography generates a 13.5nm light)

 

Most importantly is that EUV 13.5nm lithography should take us all the way down to 3nm chips. It’s hard to predict what will happen beyond 3nm :(
