New to the forum, as well as supplements in general. Scattered throughout the forum I've read that possibly too many anti-oxidants are actually bad for you. Any truth to this?

Yes it is quite likely true, just like one can really die from drinking too much water.

I understand that as a newcomer it is difficult to get perspective on things. The "experts" disagree, there is whoppiing bias in what one reads in the newspaper and many studies are not...optimal, etc.

Suffice to say that basic supps including some antioxidants are most likely beneficial. The key question is how much?

A good place to start to get my opinion on where supps fit in is here:

The thread got polluted but the first post gives you some idea of where one should start hint: not supps but water, protein, etc. The importance of sleep and of taking vitamin E in a form with not only alpha but gamma tocopherol was not mentioned.

I recently started taking Astaxanthin, which is an extremely potent anti-oxidant, because of the abundance of articles citing the importance of antioxidants. Simply go to GOOGLE SCHOLAR:

http://scholar.googl...cer&btnG=Search

There are a ton of articles showing its anti-cancer properties. Astaxanthin has more than 500 times the anti-oxidant ability of Vitamin E. HOW ARE TOO MANY ANTI-OXIDANTS BAD FOR YOU IF THE MOST POTENT ONE IS SO GOOD FOR YOU??

Too much of any one antioxidant is not great. There is more to it.

I'm sure Astax.... is wonderful, but if you ain't taking vit C, vit E (with amounts written on the label) of alpha and gamma carotene, and selenium....then you should be before you add astax.... IMHO.
