I want to be a savant, but without all the social awkwardness that normally accompanies being one.

It might also allow two savant twins to instantaneously count matches spilled on the floor (one said "111"; the other said "37, 37, 37").

It's interesting that they are able to parse visual data with this degree of precision. To look at a collection of 111 objects and immediately recognize that there are 111 of them.

Count the number of lines below by *visually* parsing as large of a set as you can (such that you count it faster than one by one)

A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A

(check your addition by going back and counting them one by one).

What was the size of the visual set you saw?

For me, I naturally saw them in sets of 3.

Some time ago, I posted articles on transcranial magnetic stimulation and it's electrical counterpart. They both produced promising results, with the electrical stimulation devices being the safer and less bulky of the two. Yet both of these techniques were/are understudied and oscrazor (neuroscientist/neuroengineer) warned against such crude manipulation, speculating on possible (perhaps even likely) long term side effects of continued use.

A quick search of this board for the key terms I've mentioned may produce exact quotes.

Was this it?

Yes, and I recall another thread I created in which I linked to a Nature article on transcranial electrical stimulation.
