Neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus takes about 30 days, which coincides with the time it takes to see an effect from SSRI's.
Below is an undergraduate level simulation on how neurogenesis can be experimentally modulated and measured. If you consider the simulation to be tedious imagine the real experiment which would take months to complete!
