Insomnia explanation

Aj28's Photo Aj28 22 Jan 2021

Hey guys just wanting to share something. I suffer from insomia and I have come up with an accidental discovery.

I have been using buspirone. As you know Buspar is a 5ht1a agonist which in most instances makes insomnia worse.
I accidently took 5mg buspirone along with 1.5mg rhodiola rosea in the morning and it made me extremely drowsy and had knocked me out.
Now rhodiola works as a stimulant for me and makes my agitation worse but not in this instance.

So I decided to give it a go before bed time and the same thing has happened again. I woke up earlier than normal refreshed and ready to go. I have been trialing this for a week to make sure this was the combination and its worked without a fail.

Any one can explain as to why this has caused this effect? Doesn't make sense to me at all as both buspirone and rhodiola are both stimulating for me.

Rhodiola increases the number of 5-ht1a receptors
https://pubmed.ncbi....h.gov/22921986/

It also looks like the effect of 5-ht1a agonists depends on the region of the brain. So to make a completely wild guess perhaps the rhodiola is increasing receptors in an area of the brain where a 5-ht1a agonist would increase sleep.

I have had similar negative sleep effects from both buspar and Rhodiola perhaps will try them together at some point.

Please let me know if you learn anything else or if your results change.
Also I assume you're using Rhodiola rosea? there are different rhodiola species and they do seem to have somewhat different components I forget the name of the one I'm using but it's not rosea.

Rhodiola rosea root…………………………….…1.5g (1500mg)
Standardised to Rosavins 15mg
Standardised to Rosavin 7.5mg
Standardised to Salidrosides 3.75mg

That's what I use. Another interesting observation is if I take half a pill its more stimulating and a whole pill makes me more lazy.

Another thing to add is I take inositol in the evening around 3.5 to 4 grams. Inositol reduces 5ht2a function which may be assisting with sleep as well.

I will keep you updated, although I have a feeling this will stop working as rhodiola needs to be cycled and dosing buspirone so low.
