I have used Zopiclone on and off for years; though always taking it occasionally to avoid dependence and tolerance In addition to the sleep-inducing effects, it is an incredibly effective appetite suppressing agent. For a full 24 hours or so after taking it, I am much less hungry and enjoy food less. The pharmacological profile does not suggest this effect; no other benzodiazepine I know of has such an effect and nothing I have ever tried for appetite control has such a long lasting effect (unless we speak of beta-adergenic agents which have serious side effects) . BTW I know it is not an outright benzodiazepine; but is "kind of similar" in its action; hence this is the closest comparison at hand.

Those who have taken Zopiclone may attribute this outcome to the "metallic mouth" symptom of the drug. It does leave a bad taste in your mouth, but in my case that has gone away after the first month of use (say after the seventh or eight pill) and a bad taste in your mouth is absolutely, definitely not enough to explain such a strong impact on appetite.

What is even more amazing is that the drug is known to cause uncontrolled eating episodes immediately after taking it. And yes, half hour or so after you take it -just before you fall asleep- there is a strong metallic taste in your mouth which makes food taste bad, but you still want to eat like crazy and often do. I have no explanation for this effect either. Many have tried to make sense of this effect by resorting to the "alleviation of impulse inhibition by way of the benzodiazepine receptor" but that makes so little sense. No other benzo has an even remotely comparable effect like that. On other benzos, you may feel relaxed and grab something pleasurable to eat while chilling, but this is something absolutely different. On Zopiclone you race to the fridge soon after taking it. Then, amazingly, the day after, you are totally cool not eating (even if you have managed not to overeat the night before -so this is not simply a case of having eaten a lot the prior night and not being hungry the next day).
Any idea what the reason behind the "day-after-appetite-reduction" effect is and what other compound may have similar effects?
