What are the negative effects of doing cardiovascular exercise for an extended period at your max heart rate? I've been pushing myself and I get to about 180 bpm (I'm 23) on the stair stepper and I can keep that up for twenty minutes or so. I don't feel bad when I do it, not sick or dizzy or anything. Will it ultimately be deleterious to my health if I keep it up?

Why would you think that is your max heart rate?

How often are you doing it?

It doesn't really matter what the answers to those questions are, assuming good health, you should have no problems.

I was told maximum heart rate is 200 - your age.

Things are rarely as simple as you might hope.

FYI , the standard formula is 220-Age.

If you can do it for 20 mins, you're not at max heart rate. I've been to max heart rate (heat stress step test in full fire turnout gear) and it's not fun.
